Just to let you know, Tara was involved in a car accident yesterday. Just seems to be a broken bone in her foot. But she's very sore and has pain in her abdomen which the surgeons were going to check out when we left the hospital tonight.
Haven't heard from Leo with the update yet. Thought you might like to see the car. R photographed it when he went to find part of her hearing aids. She was shunted from behind into and under a trailer which was behind a truck coming from the opposite direction.
Needless to say the car's a writeoff!
Yes, I was shocked too. I immediately rang my mother unable to believe that all Tara had broken was her foot. I got the full story.
My brother's partner Tara is teacher and had just driven home from work in the afternoon. They live rurally just outside Tauranga in New Zealand, so their road leads off a major highway. 2 to be exact.
Tara had stopped close to the middle of the road, with her wheels turned to the right, to turn across the highway traffic and into their road. Someone had then come up behind Tara, and had just not realised she was stopped or even there! They then shunted the back of Tara's car, and because her wheels were turned, she was pushed right, and into the opposite flow of traffic. At the very moment she was shunted a semi truck and trailer, was travelling past. Tara's bonnet went under the trailer and then swiftly under the two sets of double tires. The truck driver felt the bounce but couldn't believe what he saw in his rear view mirror when he looked to check what it was and saw Tara's car spinning behind him.
Tara was taken to hospital and unbelievably, was okay and fully conscious. As the Police kept saying in their utter disbelief, "You're alive! You're ALIVE." A split second earlier or later Tara could have gone head on into the trailer, or been side hit by the car behind the truck. All causing much more injury and damage to Tara rather than the car as did what happened. Even then it's hard to believe the car cabin didn't join her bonnet, and thank god! She's alive!
- The driver who shunted Tara is also okay. Concussed but okay.
- The truck driver is also fine. His truck (above) needs new wheel rims, but as you can see, the damage doesn't belay the full extent of the accident.
- R= Richard, my Dad
- Both my Dad and Tara wear hearing aids. Dad has age related hearing loss, Tara is half deaf from birth.

Shocking!! OMG! Those pictures are chilling. That does not look like a car that anyone could have come out of alive.
My sincere thoughts and prays go out to all involved. Please let use know what the doctors find out about Tara's abdomen.
Wow Sera! Wow. I hope Tara gets better soon and there's no lingering effects, someone/thing was watching out for her it seems. Give my love to Leo and your family, thinking of you all. Krin
That is nuts Sez! Seeing that wreckage I just can't believe that Tara is OK. Give my love to them all. Kyla
Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts.
Am going to give them a call today to make sure Tara's still okay and recovering well.
Very VERY scary. Can also put a person off driving and being in a car.
Unfortunately, New Zealand a horrendous road toll, once of the worst in the world. Mainly because the roads that take heavy loads of traffic are not highways but arterial rural roads.
NZ roads are unforgiving. Blind corners, few overtaking lanes, and speeding being a national pastime make it a hazardous place to be. And, like Tara's accident, you can be in a serious peril through absolutely no fault of your own.
That's absolutely horrendous. Amazing that Tara survived - so relieved for your family. x
